Guidelines for After a Water Advisory

Because no contaminants have been found in our system sampling in the areas that have had the boil advisory rescinded, no “flushing” of household pipes is required for safety.  That said, if customers have any concern regarding the water in their household pipes, or who simply wish to proceed with an abundance with caution, it certainly can be done.  If desired, the CDC’s recommended procedure is: turn on the cold water tap at all faucets and run the water until you feel a change in temperature (i.e. the water gets noticeably colder). This may take several minutes. Begin with the faucet that is highest up in your home or building and then open the other faucets one at a time moving from the highest floor to the lowest.  Again, none of these processes are required safety measures for District customers, but we are fielding many calls and wanted to provide the information so customers can make informed decisions as they resume water usage.  As always please email inquiries to lhwd@lefthandwater.org.
